The San Beda College of Medicine

Heed the call to heal.

Welcome to the San Beda College of Medicine, where we combine San Beda's rich tradition of work and prayer with the dynamism of its mostly UP Medicine educated doctor-faculty to provide a very humane but technologically oriented medical education.

The Curriculum

San Beda uses a curriculum that is designed to be responsive to the demands of an increasingly changing medical landscape. It uses an Integrated Problem Oriented Approach (IPOA) that exposes students to patients and clinical material early and encourages its students to think in integrated systems. Students use an integrative approach, borrowing from basic and applied sciences and adapting to patient needs in order to solve clinical problems.

The curriculum is imbued with San Beda’s rich tradition of prayer and work, leading to the development of humane, compassionate, and caring doctors.

Technology and the San Beda College of Medicine

SBCM recognizes that advances in technology in medicine have created a huge positive impact on patient care and outcomes. It also recognizes that technology’s benefits have to be translated to the way medical students are educated and taught.

SBCM has invested in various advanced computer-based teaching equipment, models, and resources to provide the student with current and up-to-date education in the medical field. San Beda continues to affirm its commitment to providing a technologically advanced medical education by allocating resources to solidly support its technology program.

SBCM has geared both its facilities and faculty to use and teach technology as a way of life of medical practice.

The Faculty of the San Beda College of Medicine

Mostly UP College of Medicine graduates who hold advanced degrees in their respective specialties, the faculty of the SBCM provide medical education that meet high standards of excellence and quality.

The faculty is composed of both senior and junior teaching staff, which combine tradition and excellence with dynamism and technological expertise, a clear advantage to the student entering a very challenging career.

Scholarships and San Beda

We at San Beda believe that an excellent student should not be deprived of medical education for purely financial reasons. SBCM offers scholarships to deserving and financially challenged students entering the Med School.

Ora et Labora and the Study of Medicine

The Benedictine tradition of Ora et Labora – Prayer and Work – provide an ideal setting to the teaching of Medicine. SBCM molds men and women who continuously strive for Christian perfection in their lives and in their work.

San Beda recently celebrated its centennial in 2001 and is now on its 107th year.

St Benedict and the Benedictine Monks

The Benedictine monks, followers of St. Benedict’s ( 480 – 547 A.D.) “Holy Rule” became the pioneers of Christian civilization, preaching the Gospel, serving the poor and sick and teaching religion and preaching the Gospel. So great was the influence of these monks that the centuries from the 6th to the 13th are called by historians the “Benedictine Centuries.”

The first Benedictines who came to the Philippines in 1895 worked as missionaries in Surigao, then established a school, San Beda College, in Manila in 1901.

St. Benedict believes that work and prayer are means to the sanctification of man and the glorification of God.
